Merseyside Waste Management Limited is a family run business based in Bootle and specialising in the collection, processing, recycling and reclamation of saleable materials from domestic, commercial, building and construction waste. Key to the profitable success of the company's waste transfer station is a new Powerscreen recycling plant, which they have recently acquired from Powerscreen distributors Blue Machinery PLC. The plant consists of a four-bay picking station, overband magnet belt, TR blower density separator and, the heart of the plant, a Trommel 615. The company says that, since the plant was installed and commissioned for them by Blue Machinery, they have not only enjoyed an increase in both the quality and volume of the saleable products but have noticed an immediate and significant reduction in the amount of waste materials going to landfill.
MWM's Bootle facility is a full waste transfer station and the company also operates a fleet of skips, roll-on-off vehicles and tippers throughout the area. Merseyside Waste Management is also contracted to Sefton Metropolitan Council and Liverpool City Council for waste materials collection and skip hire. The new recycling plant is separating and producing a wide variety of saleable products from the waste raw materials. These include topsoil, plastics, cardboard, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals and clean wood for chipboard manufacture. Rubble and oversize stone is extracted during the screening process and this is fed on to a crusher for the production of secondary aggregates.
The Powerscreen Trommel 615 is surprisingly compact for its output, having a 19m2 rotating screen area with variable speed control, a folding tail conveyor for fines and an optimum output of 150-200 tonnes per hour, depending on application and mesh size. The Trommel 615 is compatible with all Powerscreen equipment and, therefore, can form an integral component in any screening, washing, stockpiling or recycling installation. Power can be provided by a diesel engine or an electric motor, which is available as an option - and all trommel hydraulics are protected by an automatic shut-down system. A conveniently located control panel provides finger-tip management of all machine functions.
The TR Blower density separator removes light materials, which are caught in a net and then "skipped". Products from this process include recyclable paper, which can be baled and sold on for pulping and other light waste, such as polystyrene, for incineration or landfill. The overband magnet belt is an efficient method of tramp metals removal.
Powerscreen's picking stations can be customised to virtually any size to suit customers' applications. At Merseyside Waste Management, there are four picking bays on the conveyor for convenient "binning" of materials in their respective stockpiles.
The Powerscreen recycling plant has had a significant effect on the productivity of the MWM operations, increasing the saleable product volumes while very effectively reducing the tip-to-landfill element. Director Mark Hills commented "Since the plant was installed we’re saving between £4,000 and £6,000 every week on landfill charges".
