Two High-Lift Waste Handlers for Gowing and Pursey

Two High-Lift Waste Handlers for Gowing and Pursey
Gowing and Pursey is a privately owned, independent recycling specialist company based in Greater London and has recently invested in two Liebherr hydrostatic drive, articulated wheeled loading shovels to undertake a large part of their waste materials handling requirements. Operating a transfer station at Acton and a recycling centre at Ruislip, the company has been in existence for over twenty years. Partners Jack Biel and Charlie Ward were pioneers in recycling and reclamation: "We spotted the potential for recycling very early on" says Jack Biel "and now our catchement area extends from central London right out to the north and west home counties. These two wheeled loaders are our first Liebherr machines and we are very happy with their power, performance and fuel economy".

Gowing and Pursey operates a fleet of skip lorries, roll-on-off vehicles and high-sided bulkers for collection and transfer of raw waste material. Whilst the Acton location is largely a transfer station, it is at their Ruislip premises where the processing of raw waste materials takes place. Receiving construction and demolition waste and some elements of commercial waste at Ruislip, the large weekly tonnages are processed through trommels and flat-bed screening plants to reclaim clean recyclables such as hardcore, timber, topsoil and metal. Gowing and Pursey's recycling plant also includes a magnet separator for ferrous metals and a density separator blower for extracting light materials.

"We have developed our recycling plant to reclaim the maximum from the incoming raw waste material" says Jack Biel. "Nothing goes to waste from the inert material, with 100% reclamation, and we reckon that we are achieving more than 50% return when processing active waste. This not only saves transport costs and tipping levies when disposing of non-recyclable materials but", he concludes, "contributes greatly to the environmental benefits of reducing tip to landfill volumes".

Gowing and Pursey has purchased two Liebherr High-Lift Waste Handler wheeled loading shovels - an L 5422plus1 and an L 5502plus2. Both machines are employed in stockpiling, vehicle loading and unloading duties where the mobility, agility and tight turning circles of both machines is of particular benefit on this restricted recycling plant at Ruislip. Additionally, Gowing and Pursey expresses extreme satisfaction with the power and compact performance of the L 550 in particular, plus a genuine and measured reduction in fuel consumption which, says the Company, is already showing a saving of around 25% in fuel use.

Liebherr High Lift Waste Handlers are articulated, hydrostatically driven wheeled loading shovels specifically designed and built for the recycling industry. The L 542 High Lift weighs 14.58 tonnes (tipping load 7930 kg) and the L 550 High Lift 16.75 tonnes (tipping load 9,530 kg). Power is supplied by Liebherr made new generation Tier 111 engines which develop 105kW and 130kW respectively. Gowing and Pursey chose the L 550 for loading out and managing heavy materials and the high-lift arm length is specially designed to allow the operator to tidy up and top off loads on roll-on-off vehicles, as well as correctly centralizing loading of bulker trailers. The bucket capacity on this machine is 3.0m³. The L 542 shovel features parallelogram arms and a heavy-duty Ulrich high-tip 3.2m³ capacity bucket for lighter materials and which, in this configuration, is also well suited to loading high-sided bulkers.

Liebherr Waste Handlers feature high level, isolated cooling systems which are equipped with an automatically reversing fan to maintain radiator cleanliness and efficiency; cyclonic engine air pre-cleaners are also included to combat the dusty environment found in many recycling applications. The hydrostatic driveline system on the loaders not only contributes to considerable fuel consumption benefits but also, with limited slip differential in both front and rear axles, produces good efficient pushing power when stockpiling whilst, at the same time, prolonging tyre life. An automatic greasing system is standard and greatly contributes to reducing maintenance time.
