Portasilo Bulk Handling Systems provide bespoke solution for South West Water

- Materials Handling
Customer: South West Water
Location: Hayle, Cornwall
Requirement:
The waste water treatment works at Hayle in Cornwall had traditionally used a compressed air delivery system to transfer lime from its storage silo into the sludge mixing hopper. Frequent mechanical breakdowns and lime dust problems meant that the system urgently needed to be upgraded to improve efficiency and environmental conditions at the plant.
Solution:
Having worked with Portasilo Bulk Handling Systems in the past and being aware of the skills and knowledge of its Technical Services team, South West Water called in the silo system specialist to develop a solution. After a detailed inspection of the plant, Portasilo recommended moving the existing quicklime storage silo to a better location on the site - allowing a shorter transfer pipe to feed the sludge press - and upgrading the transfer system to a mechanical screw conveyor. This, combined with a new gravimetric feeder and metering equipment, would offer enhanced control over the addition of lime into the presses.
Mike Galligan, Works Manager at South West Water says: "The system designed by Portasilo rectified a number of areas of concern at the plant in a single solution - and represented excellent value for money."
Portasilo has more than 50 years' experience of designing, manufacturing and installing a vast array of products and systems to meet the demands of the bulk storage and handling industries. The team working for South West Water devised a technically advanced system, which was installed within the client's specified timescale. Mike Galligan continues: "The work was all completed to a very high standard and we are very happy with our newoperationally efficient plant. The new conveyor system increases the reliability of the transfer process and vastly improves working conditions on site. The feeder system gives us far greater control over the lime addition process, enabling us to use lime much more efficiently, reduce waste and save money."
The design and build capabilities of Portasilo, along with the unrivalled expertise of its technical teams set the company apart from the competition. Such vast industry experience allows Portasilo to develop high-quality solutions that meet the precise requirements of individual customers.
Mike adds: "The Portasilo team was excellent throughout and we are very satisfied with the service provided. Their specialists listened to our requirements, gave us honest, expert advice and guided us through the whole process. The result is a far, far more robust sludge processing facility in Hayle than we have ever had before."
Portasilo has completed many projects for South West Water over the past 10 years. With expertise that is widely recognised by the water company, Portasilo has now been contracted to provide twice yearly maintenance services at all of South West Water's sites.
