Extec Screens and Crushers Ltd has donated £2,000 to provide 13-month old James White with a special helmet needed to correct plagiocephaly, or Baby Flat Head Syndrome as it is commonly known.
James White is a twin who was born a staggering 11 weeks prematurely when he weighted just 0.68 kg (1 lb 8oz), considerably less than a pack of sugar. After 10 weeks in neonatal intensive care, James' weight had risen to 1.55 kg (3 lb 7oz) but his problems were not over; he had developed plagiocephaly.
This condition, which is manifested as a flat area on the baby's head, can be corrected with the use of a special helmet. Unfortunately, the helmet costs £2,000 and is not available on the National Health Service and his mother Shelley White had planned to raise the money with a sponsored walk on 21 June 2008.
However, when Extec became aware of James' plight, the company instantly pledged to foot the bill for the special helmet, allowing Shelley to use any funds raised during the sponsored walk towards other progressive treatments.
"Everyone at Extec was touched by James' story, and by the determination shown by his mother Shelley," says Extec managing director Ian English. "As a major local employer and an integral part of the local community, we were delighted to be able to help such a deserving cause."
"I am overwhelmed by the generosity that Extec has shown to my son. The helmet will greatly enhance James' quality of life," concludes Shelley White. "I am also delighted that they are helping us to raise awareness of this medical condition."
