Recycling Plant  Provides a Tailor-made Solution for MSK

Looking to increase their C&D recycling capabilities, make further reductions to tip-to-landfill volumes and boost their output of saleable reclaimed materials, MSK Waste Management & Recycling Limited of Barking, Essex turned to recycling equipment specialists Blue Machinery (London) Limited for a solution. After detailed discussions on their requirements and several visits to other recyclers who have benefited from Blue installations, MSK opted for a bespoke combination of a finger screening plant, a series of conveyor systems, two under-cover picking stations, an overband magnet and a blower separator. The whole plant was specifically designed and configured by Blue to suite material flow and materials to be treated, while conforming to the shape and area of the designated site for the plant. The system was installed earlier this year and is already proving to be an efficient, productive and reliable investment for MSK.

MSK (Multi Services Kent) Group has been providing a wide range of key services to the construction and allied industries for over thirty years, including logistics and labour, plant and tools, access control, soft strip and, more recently, waste management and recycling. The Group's recycling interests were originally instigated around five years ago, as a natural adjunct to the existing activities. MSK Waste Management & Recycling Limited recently came into being as a separate company within the Group and is headed up by director Mr Robert Armstrong. Based in Barking, Essex, MSK Waste Management sources raw waste material from a variety of loyal clients in the region - including major nationals, industrial and commercial concerns, demolition, dismantling and refurbishment specialists. The Barking recycling operation currently handles between 4000 and 5,000 tonnes of commingled C&D waste per month and, with their new plant now well bedded in, is reporting highly satisfactory reclamation rates. "We're keeping a close eye on the performance of our new recycling plant at Barking" says Robert Armstrong. "Working two shifts round the clock, Monday to Friday and also on Saturday mornings, we are regularly reclaiming in excess of 75% recyclable materials. Our target for the immediate future is 80% and, hopefully, we'll further improve on that figure very soon. The recycling plant is performing very well for us," he concludes, "and the team from Blue has been of great assistance in providing us with exactly what we wanted".

The MSK recycling plant is U-shaped in configuration with raw mixed waste materials initially being screened, then conveyed through two picking stations incorporating a blower and overband magnet system to produce sorted clean recycled materials for onward sale. A GK Finger Screen model 1513 is the first point of treatment for the incoming C&D waste. This rugged and versatile screening plant provides multiple sized separation of the mixed waste. Specified materials are discharged via the Finger Screen's own side conveyor onto a transfer and stockpiling conveyor system direct into holding bays. The other mixed materials for manual sorting are discharged onto a 14 metres long and 1400mm wide chevron belted inclined tail conveyor to the primary picking station belt. This covered station has five bays for the picked recyclables and a blower system at the end for removal of "lights" such as polystyrene, plastics, paper etc. From there, the material flow takes a left hand turn, with the remaining conveyed material passing underneath an overband magnet which removes all ferrous materials and thence to the two-bay secondary picking station. Here, general rubbish and alloys are sorted and dropped into bays below, with the remaining clean hardcore material stockpiled at the end of the picking station conveyor.

Blue is the appointed distributor for General Kinematics Finger Screen and De-Stoning plants throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Designed specifically for multiple sized separation of mixed waste or single stream recyclable materials, the GK (General Kinematics) Finger Screen range employs a patented, non-binding, finger screen design that reduces blinding and blockages that can occur in difficult applications, where conventional perforated or wire mesh screens are unsuitable. Full-flow cascading decks and rugged tapered fingers produce an ideal action for the efficient and trouble-free sorting and classification of materials as diverse as mixed C&D waste and even commingled MSW containing glass, paper and plastics.

The high stroke, low frequency vibratory motion ensures material is evenly spread and gives maximum screening efficiency. Staggered fingers and a cascading material flow prevent material bypass, which eliminates the need for secondary screening; a unique "cam out" surface helps to eliminate catching and blinding, with the tapered fingers gradually classifying and freeing tangled materials.

The General Kinematics range features low installation and operating costs, a virtually "jam-free" design with no moving parts and a modular deck construction which permits easy finger replacement. Dynamic balancing and isolation eliminates the need for costly foundations and, as a further saving, energy-efficient natural frequency drives can dramatically reduce operating costs.

Blue offers a range of Picking Stations and conveyor systems which can be customised to virtually any size to suit customers' applications. Pickers can be positioned on either or both sides of the variable speed conveyor and, for enhanced working conditions for operatives, fully enclosed cabin work stations - such as those installed for MSK - have heating and lighting. Discharge chutes can be positioned as required and in any number for convenient "binning" of unwanted or recyclable materials in their respective stockpiles.
