Finedoor complete upgrade for Scord Quarry

Shetland lies at the north-western frontier of the European Union, over 200 miles north of Aberdeen. It comprises more than 100 islands, 16 of which are inhabited.

There are eleven quarries on the Shetlands one of which is Scord quarry; owned and operated by the Shetland Islands Council who are responsible for the management and maintenance of 1,045 kilometres (650 miles) of public roads in Shetland.

The quarry which is 9km west of Lerwick produces over 90,000 tonnes a year of a schist type stone which, when crushed, has a tendency to flake.
Operating their on-site asphalt plant which receives imported bitumen the quarry supplies asphalt and road stone for local road building and maintenance, armour rocks and concrete aggregates for local building.
Morley based company, Finedoor Ltd have recently supplied screens and conveyors over two phases to replace aged equipment and upgrade the production capacity of the plant at Scord Quarry on the Shetland Islands.

Finedoor became involved with the quarry via an original enquiry from the county council in 2000. Due to an increase in demand locally the County Council made the decision to extend the existing plant which led to an order for new screens and conveyors which would facilitate an increase in quarry production of 14mm and 20mm material to 80-90 tonnes/hr.
Requesting a short delivery window the contract from the Shetland IC required Finedoor to design manufacture, and transport the equipment within two months.

Utilising existing crushers, a 29 metre x 650mm wide long transfer conveyor was supplied and linked to a new 5m x 1.5m two deck inclined screen fitted with flake decks and powered by a direct-drive cardan shaft. (The utilization of a cardan shaft eliminates the use of a V belt drive which provides safer operation.); this new screen was housed within a new purpose made fabricated portal framed building.

To complete this initial phase two stockpile conveyors with 15 metre x 650mm wide and one 29 metre x 650mm wide recycling conveyor were also supplied.
All foundations were constructed to Finedoor drawings by the quarry engineers and all fabrications were manufactured by Finedoor and transported direct to the quarry. The installation was carried out by the Shetland IC quarry engineers in approximately four weeks and Finedoor tested, checked and commissioned the new plant within eight weeks of the initial installation.

In the second phase Finedoor replaced a Parker 7603 16 x 5 three deck screen which was coming to the end of its life and needed replacement. In replacing this screen Finedoor supplied a 2.4 x 1.2 heavy duty 2-decked grizzly screen powered by direct -drive cardan shaft.

This new screen separates the oversize (+150mm) and delivers via conveyor to ground stockpile, the 150-45mm) is delivered to a secondary crusher (phase 1 system) and (0-45mm) sub base by conveyor to ground stockpile. All chutes were fitted with impact wear resistant liners and Finedoor also supplied steel support structure and access platforms and steel frame building to house the screen.

Finedoor supplied two stockpile conveyors, one 15 metre x 900mm wide and one 15 metre x 650mm wide and also a primary stockpile conveyor 47 metres x 650 mm wide; all the conveyors were complete with access walkway and complete enclosures.

All foundation plans and layouts, including design work and site measurement was completed by Finedoor who then transported all equipment by road and installation and commissioning was completed by Shetland IC engineers.

Billy Butler, Quarry Manager commented "We are please with the way Finedoor worked with us, and helped us modernise our crushing plant. All the plant works well and was delivered on time."
