High tech material technology used for ultra lightweight portable floor scale.

High tech material technology used for ultra lightweight portable floor scale.
Avery Weigh-Tronix has introduced an ultra lightweight portable floor scale with what it claims has the UK's highest strength to weight ratio.  Called the Air Platform, it uses high tech composite material used in aerospace applications to offer the same strength and durability as a steel floor scale, but at a fraction of the weight.

There are three models in the range, with the largest weighing just 11.2kg and able to weigh loads of up to 300kg.   While an equivalent strength steel floor scale would need several people or a forklift to move it, the Air Platform's weight is well within the health and safety limits for one person to lift.

The secret lies in its manufacture.  Made from a carbon fibre compound, this material is moulded into precision folds and curves with the weave layered in different directions.   This gives the scale a high physical strength and stiffness and the flexibility to withstand everyday shock loading.

The shell of the Air Platform consists of an inner and an outer layer, which are fused together to form a watertight case to IP65.  This and the scale's lightweight mean that it is simple to washdown.  In addition, it is UV protected for outdoor use and it has a corrosion resistant gel finish.  Able to link to a wide range of indicators and counting scales, the new ultra light scale is suitable for most applications.

Other features include a 300% overload protection with 200% side load protection, four self-levelling feet and removable load cell covers for simple maintenance.

Says Darren Waplington product manager for Avery Weigh-Tronix:  "This is the first time that high tech material used in the aerospace industry has been used for a scale.  The Air Platform is easy to install, use and clean.  For a scale that has such a high weighing capacity, it is the most portable option available."
