Corus Northern Engineering Services (CNES) is one of the largest engineering services groups in the UK, with bases in Teesside, Scunthorpe, Workington and Rotherham. Part of steel producer Corus Ltd, CNES not only works with customers inside the Corus group, but also outside of the steel industry, in sectors such as cement, mining and quarrying, oil & gas, automotive, aerospace & defence, nuclear and construction.

In the minerals processing sector, CNES has successfully carried out major equipment overhaul and refurbishment projects, starting with the supply of rolled steel kiln sections, progressing to the overhaul of process machinery and the provision of technical services.

CNES as a company possesses a highly trained workforce of engineers and managers, whose combined knowledge and transferable skills can and are being used to help other companies solve similar engineering, production and maintenance problems. CNES prides itself on being able to provide an integrated engineering approach, putting together multi-disciplinary teams from within Corus, tailor-made for a wide-range of specific jobs. CNES as a whole can offer mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil services, to develop, enhance and maintain all types of industrial process.

CNES provide a wealth of effective engineering services to all the major cement production sites in the UK. CNES offer a range of services including strip down, inspection, repair, refurbishment and re-manufacture. Projects to date have included the refurbishment of mill roller assemblies, kiln fan assemblies, screens, kiln support rollers, classifier shafts, impactor shaft assemblies, clinker breaker rotors and bucket-wheel shaft assemblies. The company possesses some of the largest, comprehensively equipped workshops and manufacturing facilities in the UK, which enables it to handle units up to 130 tonnes in weight.

Mining and quarrying companies also regularly turn to CNES for assistance on maintenance and refurbishment projects. CNES have the capability to repair screens and coating drums, design and build stacker reclaimers and overhaul all types of crushers from jaw or gyratory, to cones, bowls or shafts.

CNES does a variety of work for Cleveland Potash, who operate the UK's only potash mine, including weld reclamation of crusher rolls and refurbishment of large gearbox casings. By carrying out repair and refurbishment work on these critical gearbox casings and crusher rolls CNES has not only increased the service life of the gearboxes, but also eliminated gearbox breakdowns.

On top of this, other services to the cement, quarrying and mineral processing industry include Condition Monitoring, Automation Solutions and Railway locomotives. CNES uses a range of non-intrusive fixed and portable condition monitoring techniques to examine the condition of plant and machinery.

CNES' automation solutions team can provide all aspects of process control systems, covering all areas from the quarry face through primary and secondary areas, to coating plants and automated despatch.

In recent years, CNES also unveiled its brand new range of British-designed industrial locomotives, the first of this type of locomotive to be manufactured in the UK for more than 15 years. As the minerals industry is the largest operator of industrial railways in the UK, CNES can provide a full range of services from building brand new locomotives to servicing and re-engineering programmes.

Corus is Europe's second largest steel producer with revenues of £9.7 billion and crude steel production of 18.3 million tonnes in 2006, primarily in the UK and the Netherlands. Corus recently became a subsidiary of Tata Steel, the world's sixth largest and second most global steel producer.  With a combined presence in nearly 50 countries, Tata Steel including Corus has 84,000 employees across five continents and a crude steel production of around 27 million tonnes in 2007.
