Rulmeca are already recognized as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of quality conveyor rollers and troughing sets. We are also the world’s largest manufacture of motorized pulleys with an extensive range of diameters up to 800mm, and up to 132kW of power output. Production takes place in 11 facilities around the globe including Corby, Northants.

Rulmeca rollers and motorized pulleys are regularly used within all bulk handling industries in many diverse applications and often operating within the most extreme temperatures or arduous conditions.

Motorized pulleys at work in the UK.
Increasingly well known and utilized within the UK Coal Industry, and following steady growth within other bulk handling sectors, people have become more aware of the features and benefits of the Rulmeca motorized pulley.

Motorised pulleys offer many advantages such as low noise, improved safety and compactness. UK Coal has been reaping the rewards of these benefits after exchanging many traditional drives with motorized pulley drives at Kellingley, Maltby and Welbeck. This has been achieved in numerous areas where excessive maintenance and high running costs were a cause of great concern. These worries have been effectively eliminated due to the motorized pulley’s superior efficiency which has provided impressive electricity savings, and the standard IP67 sealing enables them to work in the very worst conditions that prevail at those sites.

Lafarge’s Mountsorrel quarry has continued to use motorized pulleys for many years now in critical areas with high throughputs that depend on absolute availability. Their toast-rack system has 2 reversible shuttle conveyors feeding crushed Leicestershire granite into multiple storage locations underneath from dust to 75mm.

For the last nine years, the main shuttle conveyor has been powered by dual 800mm diameter; 37kw motorized pulleys (one at each end) carrying material at 2.5 m/sec in excess of 2500 t/hr. They have performed so well over the years that the sister conveyor running alongside, and various other plant conveyors have now also been changed to be powered by motorized pulleys.

Benefits of the motorized pulley.
The motorized pulley is designed specifically to power field conveyors for open pit, quarrying applications, conveying sand and gravel, clay, overburden, colliery waste and other minerals/aggregates.

Noise pollution is high on the agenda in today’s modern plant and outdoor environments, and as the motor, gearbox and bearings are totally enclosed and hermetically sealed inside a steel shell, this reduces operational noise down to a whisper.

This enclosed steel shell has other benefits as it is unlikely to fail due to any ingress of harmful environmental materials such as water, dust, grit chemicals and oil; additionally it will not contaminate any conveyed materials.

In a motorized pulley, the electric motor, gearbox and bearings are mounted inside so the unit takes up much less room than a conventional drive arrangement. Basically there are only the motorized pulleys and fixing brackets. Normally exposed drives can require up to eight or more separate components, this space saving design eliminates costly extras like chains, v-belts, couplings, bearings, large support structures and special guarding.

With safety being paramount within the UK materials handling industries, the motorized pulley is probably one of the safest drives available because the motor is completely enclosed and the external shafts are always stationery, the only moving part being the motorized pulley shell itself.

Due to fewer parts the motorized pulley is more often less expensive than an exposed drive alternative; therefore there are less conveyor design and parts purchasing costs. It is quicker and easier to install due to its compact size and smooth lines and it takes less than a quarter of the time taken to fit an exposed system.

The end user also benefits from low maintenance costs as it requires no maintenance other than the recommended oil change every 10,000 hours and oil seal change every 30,000 hours. Based on an 8 hour/day working week the unit requires an oil change only every five years!

In the motorized pulley, the use of synthetic oil will extend the service range up to 30,000 hours! The unit usually has a much higher efficiency from the electrical motor to the pulley shell than conventional drives. This is because it is a more direct design of power train and therefore has fewer frictional losses and can achieve efficiencies of up to 97%.

All three phase motorized pulley’s are protected by a bi-metal thermal protection switch in each phase which must be connected to a normally closed circuit. This heat sensitive switch is built into all the motor windings to protect the motor from overheating. Additionally all units with 3 phase motors are easily controlled by variable frequency motors working in the 15Hz to 65 Hz range.

A reduction in weight saving and distribution is also possible due to the weight being evenly distributed within the conveyor frame.
