The Source is a flagship Centre providing state of the art training, development and conferencing facilities for all sectors of the local community and local businesses.
The idea of The Source took several years to plan, but once backing was received from Objective 1, Yorkshire forward, the DfES and British Land, it wasn’t long before building started. With the sound judgement and incredible foresight of these funders the project officially opened on time and on budget on Friday 21st March 2003.
The Source at Meadowhall is an innovative and unique £5.5 million training and development centre set up as a charity in partnership with Sheffield City Council. It contributes to regional, social and economic regeneration strategies, connecting disadvantaged communities to new economic opportunities, supporting local businesses in their training needs and encouraging inward investment in the sub-region.
Adjacent to Meadowhall Shopping Centre, the Source is an element of British Land’s Masterplanning programme, which is looking at sustainable development of the area, in conjunction with Sheffield City Council, over the next 20 years. The Source plays a central part in providing training for inward investors into the region. Profits are reinvested for long-term development, to create a self-sustaining organisation.
It has the full support of:
- A Board of Trustees which includes representatives from Sheffield City Council, Meadowhall and The Source, British Land and Objective 1
- A Stakeholder Advisory Group which includes representatives from Meadowhall and The Source, Objective 1, Yorkshire Forward, Learning and Skills Council and Sheffield College
- Several Steering Groups involving local schools, retailers and community groups in which local city planners, large businesses and local community groups work together to make life better for people in this area of Sheffield
The Source has built sound relationships with its partners, ensuring all are moving in the same direction, offering complimentary courses and services and ensuring sound foundations for growth and sustainability.
The Source’s socially inclusive ethos has led to over 230,000 people using the facilities and training. The facilities include high-tech training suites, a state-of-the-art gym, an IT learning centre, a crèche, a beauty salon, a training/research library and a coffee bar.
The Source achieved CoVE status in June 2005 and is therefore a Centre of Vocational Excellence in retail for the South Yorkshire area. A broad spectrum of training programmes is offered, geared specifically towards a retail audience, ranging from basic level customer service through to higher level foundation degrees at management level. The focus of the training delivered by this unique Centre is on developing the whole person, increasing confidence and unlocking potential within the individuals that use The Source.
Training and conference rooms are available for both local community groups and businesses to deliver training or use as a venue for meetings. A dedicated service is offered to delegates, paying particular attention to detail and individual needs. This high quality service has been rewarded by the Centre’s achievement of the prestigious World of Learning Conferencing Venue of Year Award for 2006.
The success of The Source is such that a Celebration of Success Day is held every two years in recognition of the wonderful achievements of the learners on programmes and also to celebrate the success of The Source as a business. The business has grown way beyond all expectations and provides a unique environment to attract, engage and motivate learners.
The Source will continue to work not only with its funders and partners, but also with local businesses and communities to ensure that their needs are met, as their growth and development will, in turn, become the growth and development of The Source.
